Scout's Q&A

Report Card Answers

The questions we get most from fans and Football Manager diehards, answered without the hype.

What makes a player a wonderkid?

A teenager performing well above their age level — ideally with senior minutes — whose decision-making and character suggest an elite ceiling. Youth-league goals alone don't qualify.

At what age do scouts start watching players?

Many academies identify children from around eight or nine. Serious projection usually starts in the mid-teens, when growth spurts begin to even out and real ability shows.

What is the relative age effect?

Players born early in a selection year are often older and more physically developed than teammates, so they're over-represented in academies. Read more in Inside a Scout's Matchday.

Are hidden gems really cheaper?

Often, yes. Players in lower leagues or less-watched countries carry lower fees because demand and information are limited. See Bargains Below the Top Flight.

How reliable are Football Manager potential ratings?

They're researched estimates and great for discovery, but never a guarantee. Treat them like a highlight reel: a reason to look closer, not proof.

Which position is hardest to scout young?

Goalkeepers and centre-backs. They often peak later, and their key skills — positioning, command, reading danger — depend on experience and physical maturity.

Should a wonderkid move to a big club early?

Minutes usually matter more than the badge. Many top talents benefited from regular senior football before stepping up, as Bellingham did at Birmingham and Dortmund.

Do you represent players or clubs?

No. We're an independent editorial site with no agency, club or betting ties. See Our Scouting Desk.

Can I send you a player to look at?

Absolutely. Use the Tip-Off page to build a scout report and email it to the desk.
